What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is the study, art, and science of applying specific touch techniques to the feet, hands, and ears. It is a unique method of using the thumb and fingers to stimulate more than seven thousand two hundred nerve endings in each foot. It is thought these nerve endings correspond to all parts of the body, including organs and glands. Stimulation of the appropriate region is intended to open energy flow and reduce blockages which are thought to produce pain or disease in the related areas.
Reflexology is used to assist well being rather than cure any disease, and can be used to provide comfort in a wide variety of conditions.
Reflexology activates the parasympathetic nervous system. The effect of activation of this part of the nervous system is called "The Relaxation Response". With this system activated, muscle contraction, blood pressure, heart rate and nervous tension are sometimes greatly reduced. Sleep can improve and the body's ability to repair itself is enhanced.
This nervous system also triggers the brain to release "good" hormones that relax and soothe the mind and provide some means for understanding and tending to the source of stress. It has now been scientifically proven that relaxation aids healing.
